Francesco De Nanto (or Denanto), Adoration of the Shepherds. 1520–1525 [printed in the early 19th century]. Woodcut. 433 × 298 mm. Sheet: 440 × 304 mm. Passavant, I, p. 150. Urbini/Piazzi, Atlas of Italian Renaissance Woodcuts, ALU.0292.1, ALU.0292-M. (plate). T. Depaulis, “From Savoy to Rome: Francesco de Nanto, a Neglected Printmaker of the Early Sixteenth Century,” in *Print Quarterly*, 2020, vol. XXXVII, pp. 123–139. Lower right: “FRANCIS(CUS)/ DE NANTO.” The woodcut is part of a series of at least thirteen woodcuts depicting scenes from the Life of Christ, carved after drawings by Girolamo da Treviso and datable, based on the stylistic characteristics of the compositions, to between 1520 and 1525, that is, to the early period of Girolamo’s career in Bologna. The printing block is preserved at the Gallerie Estensi in Modena (ALU.0292-M), in the Soliani collection, and several modern prints are known to exist. An excellent printed copy, with areas of good embossing on the reverse, on thick laid paper apparently without a watermark. On the lower part of the reverse, the collection mark of Richard Holtkott (Cologne, 1866 – Rhöndorf, 1950), (Lugt, 4266). (1) Copy with small margins extending beyond the framing line. Minimal traces of printing creases and handling. On the reverse, some residue from paper tape and old glue at the top.
