Antonio da Trento, *The Martyrdom of Two Saints*. c. 1527–1530. Three-block woodcut in light brown-gray, medium brown-gray, and black. 293 × 482 mm. Bartsch, XII, 28. Takahatake, 35. Based on a drawing by Parmigianino that the artist first provided for use as a chisel engraving by Jacopo Caraglio (Bartsch, XV, 8) and then for the execution of this chiaroscuro print. Vasari describes the subject as the Martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul, but only the saint kneeling in the foreground, in the act of being beheaded, corresponds to the iconography of Saint Paul. A beautiful print in the first state of the second edition, according to Naoko Takahatake, on thin laid paper; since the print is back-printed, it is not possible to verify the presence of a watermark. On the reverse of the mount, a small collection mark within a circle in blue ink, apparently not listed in Lugt. (1) The print has been trimmed to the outline and mounted at the top on a modern cardboard backing. Some tears have been repaired by pasting over them onto an old cardboard backing, with the title and credit information written in brown ink at the bottom. There are paper losses in the lower right corner.
