Luca Bertelli [excudit], Adoration of the Shepherds. c. 1580. Chisel engraving. 392x500 mm. Muraro/Rosand, 55A. On the plate, lower right: “Tytianus pro Luca Berteli.” The engraving, published by Bertelli toward the end of the 16th century, reproduces as a reverse image a well-known composition by Titian that has been replicated in various copies. The subject was also rendered in woodcut form, long attributed to Nicolò Boldrini but actually carved by Giovanni Britto around the middle of the century. An excellent impression, printed with a sharp line and full inking on slightly thick laid paper that appears to lack a watermark. (1) The sheet has been trimmed to the edge of the copper plate, with narrow margins extending beyond the framing line. The sheet is mounted at the top within a modern cardboard mount. Vertical fold in the center. Traces of slight peeling and paper residue on the reverse due to detachment from a previous backing. Minor defects.
