Hans Sebald Beham, Village Brawl. 1547. Engraving. 51x73 mm. Bartsch, VIII, 162. New Hollstein, 190. With the monogram in the upper center of the plate, the number “9” shifted to the left, and the date “1547” below the ribbon-shaped cartouche bearing the inscription. Ninth plate from *Peasant Festival and the Twelve Months*, a series of ten sequentially numbered plates executed between 1546 and 1547: the scenes depict a series of thirteen pairs of dancers and two musicians, followed by a banquet, a brawl, and other scenes related to the festival. The first twelve pairs of dancers are identified by inscriptions as representations of the months. The series was conceived to be displayed as a frieze, with parts of the figures—such as the characters’ heels or skirts—extending across two plates. A beautiful impression in State II of 2, printed with good line definition on thin laid paper. (1) Copy trimmed slightly inside the copper plate’s border on the right side, with narrow margins on the remaining three sides. Mounted at the top with two staples within a modern cardboard mount.
