Hans Sebald Beham, Christ Carrying the Cross. 1521–1522. Woodcut. 125 × 85 mm. Bartsch, VIII, 89. Hollstein, 823. Signed with a monogram in the upper right corner. From *The Passion*, a series of eight plates that Beham began carving in 1521; in 1522, after completing six woodcuts, he added the remaining two— *The Betrayal* and *Christ Before Caiaphas*, in 1535; at the same time, he reportedly removed the dates from the earlier blocks. Excellent proof in the second state of 2 following the removal of the date, on thin laid paper without a watermark. On the reverse, a stamp from the collection of Raffaele Alianello (Luino, 1908–Naples, 1988), (Lugt, 5k). (1) The print has been trimmed to the mounting line, which is almost entirely visible, and is secured by two staples at the top within a modern cardboard mount.
