15 - Hans Sebald Beham [attributed to], Soldier with His Fiancée. 1521. Engraving. 76x52 mm. Bartsch, VIII, 202. Hollstein, 198 (copy?). With the monogram and the date “1521” on the plate in the upper left corner. A fine impression on thin laid paper of this uncommon engraving. Recently, some critics have suggested that this is a deceptive, uncataloged copy of an original by Sebald Beham. On the reverse, a stamp from the Henry Hirsch Collection, Johannesburg (not listed in Lugt). (1) Copy trimmed to the edge of the plate (slightly inside at the bottom), with narrow margins and mounted at the top with two staples on a modern cardboard backing. Minimal repairs on the reverse.
