Barthel Beham, Winged Genius on a Globe. 1520. Engraving. 56x34 mm. Bartsch, VIII, 32. Hollstein, 57. New Hollstein, 64. With the date "1520" on the plate in the upper right corner. An excellent, crisp impression of this rare subject on thin laid paper. This small plate is one of eleven known engravings dated 1520 and created by Barthel when he was just eighteen years old. A highly original composition in which the figure of the Genius—a spirit of the air who conveyed divine messages to humans in the form of premonitions and dreams—is associated with that of Fortune through the presence of the globe and the staff, attributes typical of depictions of the goddess of fate. Small winged children or genies endowed with such attributes appear in the works of Dürer and other contemporary artists, but they are usually depicted on the ground; here, however, the figure is in flight and is the main subject of the composition. (1) The print has been trimmed by 1/2 mm within the copper plate’s border and is mounted with two staples at the top on a modern cardboard backing. In the center, there is a very slight trace of a horizontal crease and evidence of an old, well-executed restoration.
