A Victorian 14k bicolour gold panel bracelet with Isalamic lapis lazuli intaglios and snake motifs. Bi-colour gold bracelet with finely chased serpent motifs, set with five graduated octagonal lapis lazuli plaques, the hand-engraved intagli decorated with Oriental calligraphy. Hook-and-eye clasp. Not hallmarked. Length 18.0 cm. Weight 34.50 g. Probably England, using old Kufic intaglios, c. 1860s. During the Victorian era, the practice of acquiring ancient gems as souvenirs of the Grand Tour and subsequently having them mounted in jewellery experienced a revival. Unlike the sentimentally driven enthusiasm for antiquity of the early Neoclassical period, this phase was characterised by a historical and scholarly approach. Ancient artefacts were incorporated into jewellery, appealing to a collecting audience with an interest in archaeology.
