Émile CLAUS (1849–1924) Beach at Coxyde (Koksijde) Pastel. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. 30 x 24 cm Émile Claus painted the Belgian coastline on numerous occasions. Stylistically, this pastel could date from between 1905 and 1918. It is also known that, during World War I, he was invited by the Queen of Belgium—both in the summer of 1916 and in the summer of 1917—to stay at the royal villa in La Panne, located behind the front lines. Claus therefore traveled from London to La Panne to stay there for several weeks. La Panne is very close to Koksijde. We thank the committee for the preservation of Émile Claus’s work for confirming the authenticity of this piece and for the information they provided us.
