LUC CLAUS (1930–2006) – "untitled" – lithograph – signed in pencil – dated 1987 – numbered 93/100 – 70 x 50 cm Luc Claus 1930–2006, Belgian artist One of his favourite themes was that of the head and the pedestal. Those unfamiliar with his work might mistake these for preparatory sketches for sculptures. Yet they are always drawings in their own right, albeit ones of great sculptural merit. Simple geometric shapes are often combined with elements drawn from everyday life or nature. The thirty or so sketchbooks he left behind bear witness to his artistic exploration and his ability to combine abstract forms with observations of his immediate surroundings. Thus, a half-dried puddle of water on a flat roof inspires him just as much as a tower appearing to float in the New York night sky. A selection of Claus’s drypoint engravings is held in the print room of the Royal Library in Brussels. The Mu.ZEE museum in Ostend houses a selection of his drawings. The Teylers Museum in Haarlem and the National Library of France in Paris have also acquired works by him.
