Kiribati - Gilbert Inseln Geflochtene Rüstung Kokosfasern Die vollständig aus geflochtenen Kokosfasern gefertigte Rüstung gehört zu den charakteristischen Schutzwaffen der Gilbert-Inseln. Sie besteht aus Helm, Brustpanzer mit Ärmeln und Hose und wurde aufgrund ihrer außerordentlichen Festigkeit zum Schutz gegen Speere, Keulen, Schwerter, Haizahnwaffen und sogar Geschosse früher Musketen eingesetzt. Die steife Konstruktion schränkte die Bewegungsfreiheit des Trägers erheblich ein, weshalb ihm im Kampf ein Helfer als Waffenträger zur Seite stand. Charakteristisch sind die eingearbeiteten rautenförmigen Ornamente aus dunkel gefärbter Kokosfaser bzw. Menschenhaarschnur. Ergänzend konnten Gürtel und Brustpanzer aus Rochenhaut getragen werden.
