Die Keulen gehörten zum Besitz der Häuptlinge und wurden bei besonderen zeremoniellen Anlässen eingesetzt, insbesondere bei Festlichkeiten zum Abschluss eines Krieges. Ihre Funktion ging damit über die eines bloßen Schlag- oder Waffengeräts hinaus: Sie waren Ausdruck von Rang, Autorität und der öffentlichen Bekräftigung sozialer Ordnung.
