D. R. Kongo, Yombe Maternité "phemba", vor 1920 leichtes Holz, Pigmente handschriftlicher Sammlungsverweis "Congo", vom Scheitel bis zum Sockel durchgehende kreisrunde Bohrung Eine Arbeit derselben Werkstatt / Künstlerhand befand sich in der Sammlung des Baron Eduard von der Heydt, abgebildet in "Kunst der Naturvölker" von Eckart von Sydow aus dem Jahr 1932 (AHDRC 0017934). Diese Mutter-Kind-Darstellungen sind im ganzen Kongo-Gebiet als "phemba" bekannt. Sie gelten als Huldigung der Urmutter, die Wächterin der Fruchtbarkeit ist, zugleich aber auch erinnert an Vergänglichkeit und den ewigen Kreislauf von Leben und Tod. Sie ist ausgestattet mit aufwändigen Skarifikationen, Armringen, Lendenschurz, typischer Frisur und gefeilten Schneidezähnen. Alles Attribute, die in der Kongo-Gesellschaft nur Personen von hohem Rang und Titel zustehen.
