Die Ijaw zählen zu den ältesten Bewohnern des Nigerdeltas und besiedelten die Region bereits um 800 n. Chr. Ihre religiöse Vorstellungswelt ist geprägt vom Glauben an die weibliche Gottheit „wonyinghi“, an die Ahnen und an Naturgeister („oru“), die im Mittelpunkt vieler Rituale stehen und in Masken und Skulpturen dargestellt werden. Die stehenden Figuren auf den Maskenaufsätzen der zentralen und westlichen Ijaw gelten als verkleinerte Darstellungen von Schreinskulpturen dieser Naturgeister. Sie können naturalistisch oder geometrisch gestaltet sein; die Mehrgesichtigkeit wird als Ausdruck übernatürlicher Kräfte gedeutet.
