Joseph-Marie REVEL (admitted as a master craftsman in 1775). A clock in gilded bronze and white marble with rich arabesque decoration, horns of plenty, and garlands of fruit; the signed enameled dial is flanked by sphinxes and surmounted by an exotic fruit made of white glass imitating ivory, resting on a “Turkish-style” cushion. Late 18th century. 42 x 36 x 11 cm. (Restorations to the dial). Commentary: Joseph-Marie REVEL, who had his workshop on Rue Vieille du Temple and later worked at the Palais Royal, collaborated with the greatest bronze casters of his time, such as André RAVRIO and François REMOND. The finesse and quality of the chiseled arabesques adorning this clock are reminiscent of Remond’s work.
