Mariano ANDREU (1888–1976) View of the artist’s home in Sant Genís dels Agudells, near Barcelona. Oil on canvas, signed and dated “1920” in the lower left corner. 60 x 80 cm. On the back of the frame: a label from the exhibition “Paysages de France” organized in Paris by the Galerie Charpentier in 1945. (Wear on the frame). Provenance: Mr. CARAYOL, sale of July 22, 1984, at Villa Tragaviento, Biarritz, lot 23. Commentary: This mansion, a true landmark in the landscape surrounding Barcelona and nicknamed the “Torre Groga” by locals, was a regular vacation destination for the artist and his wife. Although the building no longer exists today, its gardens are now associated with another painter: the artist Manuel Jiménez ARNALOT (1927–1993). Although Mariano ANDREU exhibited at the Charpentier Gallery between 1942 and 1954, our painting was not included in the 1945 exhibition. This is therefore a reused frame, a practice the artist frequently employed, even if it meant “adapting” his frames, as is the case here. We thank Mr. Dominic HOLZAPFEL, custodian of the artist’s archives, for this information.
