Alfred RENOLEAU (1854–1930) A glazed terracotta trompe-l’œil depicting a pike and river fish rendered in a naturalistic style. Mounting holes on the back. Signed and dated in relief: A Renoleau 1887 Length: 64 cm. (chip on one fin) Renoleau was a French ceramicist active from the late 1880s onward. He is known for his naturalistic earthenware pieces inspired by Bernard Palissy’s creations (the “figulines”), following the technique of Charles Avisseau. The incised signature dates from his so-called “Manslois” period, during which he produced Palissy-style pieces (1880–1887). These are Alfred Renoleau’s oldest and most sought-after works.
