COLERIDGE (Samuel Taylor). THE OLD MARINER’S SONG. New translation by Valery Larbaud. Paris: Victor Beaumont, 1911. Small 8vo, orange morocco, ribbed spine, gilt title, date at the foot, gold-filleted edges and caps, interior border decorated with garlands and gold fillets, gilt head, cover preserved (Pinardon). Ex-libris “Adelina & Ricardo Guiraldes” pasted to the front endpaper. FIRST EDITION of this new French translation, completely revised by Valery Larbaud and accompanied by a new introduction. However, this is not his first translation of the poem: an earlier version, titled “La Complainte du vieux marin,” was published by Léon Vanier in 1901, when Larbaud was only twenty years old. The 1911 edition establishes the text under the now-classic title “La Chanson du vieux marin” and serves as the translator’s definitive version. COPY BELONGING TO RICARDO GÜIRALDES (1886–1927), an Argentine novelist and poet, featuring an AUTOGRAPHED DEDICATION by the translator: “To Don Ricardo Güiraldes / with warm regards / Valery Larbaud.” A BEAUTIFUL COPY, in PERFECT CONDITION, finely bound at the time by the Parisian bookbinder Pinardon. ¶ Fléty, 144.
