[AUTOGRAPH]. SAND (George). AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED “G. SAND.” Nohant, August 29, [1869]. One page handwritten in brown ink on a sheet (20.5 x 13.5 cm) bearing the embossed initials “GS.” Slight creases; minor damage in the lower right corner. A CHARMING AUTOGRAPH NOTE BY GEORGE SAND (1804–1876), addressed to close correspondents whom she affectionately calls “My dear children,” likely the painter Eugène Lambert and his wife [In a letter to Flaubert written between September 2 and 4, 1869, George Sand explains that she is canceling her trip to Normandy because the Lamberts, whom she had planned to visit in Yport, are returning to Paris]. The writer asks whether her correspondents will be staying in Yport “throughout the month of September?” on the Normandy coast, and plans to visit them: “I’ll come to give you a hug—please write back!” ” She then mentions various domestic concerns (“I’ll take care of the cow myself with [Amédée] Despruneaux, and a pony [etc.]”), before concluding affectionately: “I kiss you a thousand times.” A fine example of George Sand’s intimate and informal correspondence, reflecting her affection for her loved ones and the spontaneity of her letter-writing.
