Five volumes in 12mo format, bound in marbled brown calfskin, spines with five raised bands decorated with small gilt metal fittings, title and volume number labels in garnet morocco, red edges (contemporary binding). The bindings of volumes 4 and 5 are modeled after the first three volumes; the covers of volume 5 are in fawn sheepskin with a pattern of black diamonds, four cap bands that are worn down or partially worn down, and eight rounded corners. FIRST EDITION, very rare, of this collection of royal ordinances covering all aspects of military life in the 18th century. Beautiful FRONTISPICE engraved on steel by J. B. Scotin for the first three volumes.
