MISSING: the first 4 leaves of vol. 2 (half-title, title page, and text pages 1–4), corner damage with loss of a few words on pages 1 and 2 of vol. 5, significant leather loss on the front cover of vol. 2, some signs of wear, small areas of leather loss, and incipient splitting at two joints on the bindings. ORIGINAL EDITION, in folio format, consisting of 4 VOLUMES OF PLATES of this MAJOR 18TH-CENTURY WORK, a symbol of the Enlightenment and the first French encyclopedia. The 4 volumes contain a total of 935 PLATES, a number of which are double-page spreads: vol. 2 (188 plates), vol. 4 (275 plates), vol. 5 (236 plates), and vol. 8 (236 plates). The complete set comprises a total of 35 volumes, including 12 volumes of plates.
