Gerhard Altenbourg. Ten reproductions and two original drawings with an introduction by Frank Grimm. [Berlin], Galerie Springer 1958. Includes 16 watercolor and ink drawings, two of which are full-page and monogrammed, and twelve pasted-in photographs. Original linen binding with handmade paper covers. Call time: approx. 3:48 p.m. (schedule subject to change) One of 50 copies. - Signed, dated, and numbered by the artist in the colophon, and bearing the artist’s embossed stamp. - On handmade paper. - The presentation within this small edition varied considerably and, in most cases, went beyond the announced title, though the majority of the additional drawings may be understood as artistic complements to the typography designed by Altenbourg. The two studio photographs, which complement the ten photos of the artist’s own works, are at least mentioned on the half-title page. - Both covers feature a sheet of handmade paper with a three-part typographic print of the artist’s anagram, decorated with ink brushwork. - With the introduction “On Images by Gerhard Altenbourg.” - Altenbourg (1926–1989) was considered an exceptional figure in the now-defunct GDR art scene. Until the 1980s, he faced obstacles to exhibiting and publishing his work there; it was not until his 60th birthday that major exhibitions took place and *Wund-Denkmale* was published by Sisyphos-Presse in Leipzig (see Cat. No. 300). - Very rare; one of the artist’s earliest publications and, in the truest sense of the word, a “painter’s book.” Janda 59/3 31.3 × 22.2 cm. 27, [1] pages. - Spine faded.
