Heinrich Zille. Casual Stories and Images. Lithographs. Berlin, Fritz Gurlitt, 1919. Includes 45 lithographs, one of which is signed; 17 are full-page, and one is on the front cover. Original illustrated half-parchment binding with cord closure. Auction start time: approx. 1:48 p.m. (Schedule subject to change) The New Picture Books, Series II. — One of 200 copies on antique-toned handmade paper (total print run 265). — Imprint and the first lithograph signed by the artist. - Most pages also feature lithographed text based on Heinrich Zille’s manuscript. - The first series of lithographs from 1919 was, due to the nature of the reproduction process, reserved at the time for only a small circle of art enthusiasts. At one point, the volume was confiscated for being too “indecent,” the publisher was fined, and some of the sheets were banned from sale. “It is very interesting to observe how all the stages are present in the book: from the naturalistic effort to ‘sketch the thing’ to the final formulation, which no longer needs it and can confidently leave it out (but unlike the young gentlemen who fidget because they can’t do anything at all). Zille’s soul is Berlin itself: soft, a big mouth, warm feet whenever possible, and: ‘it’s not half as bad as it seems.’” (Kurt Tucholsky, in: “Berlins Bester,” Die Weltbühne, Jan. 20, 1925, No. 3, p. 95). Rosenbach 59–98, 100–107 b. — Oschilewski 11. — Hayn/Gotendorf 640 40.0 × 29.5 cm. 48 leaves.
