Hermann Hesse. Two letters to his sister Adele, one handwritten, both signed “Hermann.” Gaienh[ofen], February 15, 1912, and undated. Auction time: approx. 1:36 p.m. (Schedule subject to change) I. Typewritten letter, Gaienhofen 1912, 28.5 × 22 cm. “If your plan with Gertrud comes to fruition, I am happy to contribute 30 marks [...] I think the plan is a good one, even though I’m not fond of the Kornthaler Institute, and I’m glad to be able to show some kindness toward Theo.” He writes about a portrait by the Schaffhausen painter Hans Sturzenegger, with whom he was in India in 1911. Mia, his first wife, had “her hands full looking for a nanny; there were disappointments and misfortunes.” He also mentions that the family must leave Gaienhofen: “In March, I’ll take a look at Hellerau.” - II. Handwritten letter, undated, one and a half pages, 21 × 15 cm, lined: “Tuesday evening, dear Adis, today is the first day Ninon has been feeling better. We returned from the Eiger Glacier exhausted but satisfied [...] with very sunburned faces.” Apparently, Hermann Hesse was there with his third wife, Ninon, for a health cure. - Included: 14 private, special, and single-sheet prints.
