Werkbund Exhibition in Stuttgart—Exhibition “The Chair.” Stuttgart, September/October 1928, at the Municipal Exhibition Hall on Interimtheaterplatz. Stuttgart, Julis Hoffmann, 1928. With numerous illustrations. Original paperback with a photomontage as the front cover illustration. Auction start time: approx. 1:09 p.m. (schedule subject to change) A very rare catalog of this historically significant exhibition, which took place in the same time period and context as the exhibition “The Apartment” (1927) and shortly after the opening of the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart—both of which are considered the beginning of modern furniture design. - On display were over 400 chairs made of wood and tubular metal, including works by Mies van der Rohe (tubular metal with metal mesh), two chairs by Gerri Rietveld, one designed by Mart Stam, and a swivel armchair by Charlotte Perriand, who had been working at the Le Corbusier/Pierre Jeanneret studio since 1927. Her design, dated 1929, is now attributed to Le Corbusier as the “LC7.” - 15 illustrations in the catalog section, approximately 50 in the extensive advertising section “The Chair Industry.” - With two inserts: a supplement to the exhibitor directory (numbers 406–472) and a color plate titled “The Hinz Health Chair, Model Sto.” - Very well preserved. - From the estate of Walter Porstmann. 21.0 × 14.7 cm. 48 pages, 2 sheets.
