De Stijl - Theo van Doesburg. Typewritten letter with signature. Clamart near Paris, October 16, 1925. Written on both sides. Auction start time: approx. 1:05 p.m. (schedule subject to change) An important letter regarding the reception of De Stijl in France. - On the letterhead of the editorial office of “De Stijl || Orgaan der Nieuwe Beelding,” of which Theo van Doesburg was the editor. The new logo, designed jointly by Mondrian and Doesburg, replaced the design by Vilmos Huszár, who subsequently resigned his membership. - Addressed to the architect and architecture critic Jean Badovici (1893–1956), the founder of “L’architecture vivante,” one of the most important international architectural journals of the Modernist era. - Van Doesburg laments that the special issue of “L’architecture vivante” dedicated to De Stijl had already been printed without his having seen proofs beforehand. He is concerned whether the layout has been adapted to that of “De Stijl” as discussed. He hopes that Badovici was still able to include some works (“realisée par mon ami Rietveld”) in the “numéro spécial.” Upon receiving the proofs, he suggests meeting at Badovici’s Paris office. - With a few spelling corrections, likely made in Doesburg’s own hand. - Exhibited in the Van Doesburg exhibition at Villa Stuck, Munich, 2000/2001, cat. no. 86. 28.6 × 22.2 cm. - Folded in half twice; the reverse side is minimally stained and slightly browned in places.
