Bauhaus - Johannes Itten. Handwritten letter with signature. Zurich, September 24, 1962. One page. - Two printed materials from the Itten School in Berlin. Auction time: approx. 1:05 p.m. (schedule subject to change) To Eckhard Neumann, Frankfurt am Main (1933–2006), the rediscoverer of the Bauhaus. — “For your exhibition, I am sending you the *Utopia* booklet with my analytical essay [...] and two sheets of letterhead from the Itten School in Berlin. If you’d like to inquire about the graphic design classes at the Itten School, please write to Prof. Max Debus [...] I myself designed a single poster for the Peters construction company [...].” - With the addressed envelope. - Also included are a letter and a certificate from the “Ittenschule.” Two unused sheets of letterhead, probably from around 1928. A4 format. The design may be by Maximilian Debus (1904–1981), who, after studying in Berlin, at the Bauhaus in Dessau, and in Wuppertal, studied at the Itten School beginning in 1926 and later taught there. Johannes Itten had opened his private art school in 1924, after leaving the Weimar Bauhaus in 1923 following disagreements with Gropius over the school’s future direction. In 1936, the Nazis closed this school as well. - Perfectly preserved documents from the famous “Bauhaus Competition.” - Included: *Die Form*. Journal for Creative Work. Issue V/6, March 1930. Featuring a lengthy article by Johannes Itten on the work at his school. - Acquired from the estate of Eckhard Neumann and has been in private ownership ever since.
