Herbert Bayer. H. Berthold ABC Calendar 1932. Berlin [1931]. Title page, 67 tear-off sheets, and backing board. Stapled along the top edge with a black linen fold. Call time: approx. 1:01 p.m. (schedule subject to change) Signed “bayer” in print on the title page. - Letterpress printing in blue, yellow, red, and black; each sheet is designed in two colors. - Features illustrations of typefaces and printing, numerous type samples, and a short article on typefaces, typography, and the company’s history in the lower right corner of each sheet. - A very rare promotional item from the renowned type foundry, certainly not produced in large quantities as a gift for important clients and “distributed individually” as a desk calendar throughout the year, one sheet at a time. - After leaving the Bauhaus in Dessau in 1928, Herbert Bayer had cemented his reputation as an outstanding typographer and designer at the Berlin agency Dorland, which he headed. For the Berthold type foundry, he designed this first calendar—as well as three more for the years 1933–1935—and numerous type specimens. The titles of the subsequent years, illustrated in Rösler and Bayer’s 1967 publication, suggest that the “new” spirit had also taken hold of the design of the Berthold calendars. - Very rare; no copies known to be on the market. Rössler B-02. — Bayer 1967, illustrations on p. 29 14.5 : 16.1 cm. [68] leaves. — Perforation on the title page backed with Japanese paper; otherwise flawless.
