Bauhaus - László Moholy-Nagy. Letterhead “The Bauhaus in Dessau.” Two-color letterpress print on paper. 1925. - On it: A typewritten letter to Iwan Tschichold. June 12, 1925. With stamp and signature. Announcement time: approx. 12:47 p.m. (schedule subject to change) With the text block rotated vertically for the workshop address, intended to suggest the edge of the booklet. - The design “has no fold marks yet and attempts to emphasize the sender’s line through size and boldness. Bayer does not typically use these and similar contrasts, which could indicate Moholy’s authorship.” (The A and O of the Bauhaus). This assumption was confirmed in 2009 by Hattula Moholy-Nagy, the artist’s daughter. - As early as May 1925—that is, even before Bayer’s designs were printed—Moholy had written a letter on this stationery. - Content: The Bauhaus in Dessau, represented by Dr. Walter Haas, confirms to the Leipzig typographer Ivan (Jan) Tschichold that it could produce a desk based on the model designed by Marcel Breuer for the 1923 Bauhaus Exhibition (“as the one in the work alcove in the Haus am Horn”) could be manufactured. “We receive numerous inquiries about our products every day, and for this reason alone, we do not have such a desk in stock.” Prices and delivery terms follow. — The distribution of the designs and products from the Bauhaus workshops required a commercial company. On November 4, 1925—just three months after this letter was written—Bauhaus-GmbH was entered into the Dessau Commercial Register. Dr. Walter Haas was the sole shareholder with power of representation. (cf. Wingler, p. 122). The Essentials of the Bauhaus, Cat. No. 74, Fig. 100 29.7 × 21.0 cm.
