Bauhaus - Erich Glas. Phaedrus Augusti libertus. Aesop's Fables. Eight woodcuts. 1920. 11.5 : 9.5 cm (21.0 : 16.5 cm). Signed, numbered, and titled on the mat. Auction start time: approx. 12:43 (Schedule subject to change) Copy 14/15. — On soft, long-fiber Japanese paper. — With a ninth woodcut serving as the title page. - All mounted in passe-partouts; these are loose in an original half-parchment folder with a gilded title on the spine and marbled Japanese paper covers (Otto Dorfner, Weimar). - According to Sennewald, the folder was published as a special edition accompanying the book edition (Berlin, Amsler & Ruthardt 1920), which contained eight woodcuts (though there, as in comparable copies, only six woodcuts are present); here, the title woodcut bears a handwritten correction to the number - Supplement: A sheet with typewritten text quotations accompanying the eight woodcuts. — Erich Glas (1897–1973) initially studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under F. H. Ehmcke before coming to the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919, where he studied in Johannes Itten’s preparatory course and was accepted into the printmaking workshop led by Walter Klemm. In 1921, he became a member of the artists’ group “Das junge Rheinland.” Dorfner Network Catalog 2014, Cat. No. 48 (this copy). - Cf. Sennewald 20 b : approx. 28.5 : 22.0 cm (portfolio).
