Max Oppenheimer. Rosé Quartet. Color lithograph. Circa 1920. 66 × 66 cm (70 × 78 cm). Signed “MOPP” on the stone. Auction start time: approx. 12:28 (Schedule subject to change) One of 50 copies. - On thin vellum. - The lithograph was based on Oppenheimer’s 1917 painting “Klingler Quartet”; and in 1924 he expanded the depiction—which had been reduced to hands and instruments—for the oil painting “Das Rosé-Quartett” (Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, Inv. No. Gm2035). After Thomas Mann visited a Mopp exhibition at the Caspari Gallery in Munich, his enthusiastic review of the painting “Das Konzert” culminated in the following conclusion: “In any case, here is someone who has reached the pinnacle of his artistry. This artist’s fundamental elements of love—music and spirit—unite, amid a stormy unfolding of various shades of gold, light brown, orange, matte blue, and angelic white, into a vision of heightened reality and fervor.” (Berliner Tageblatt, evening edition, January 12, 1926). — Arnold Rosé, a brother-in-law of Gustav Mahler, was concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic. His quartet, founded in 1905, became world-famous. — A beautiful, vividly colored print of this decorative and popular lithograph. - With traces of ink from the large-format stone on the right margin. Pabst L 15 (illustrations also appear on the catalog cover and the section heading “Lithographs”). Page margins minimally creased; short tears in the lower right margin.
