Horst Janssen. Handwritten letter with a double self-portrait. [Hamburg,] April 16, 1982. Two pages, with a colored-addressed envelope. Call time: approx. 12:20 p.m. (Schedule subject to change) Page 1 features a large pencil drawing: a self-portrait in profile, with the artist kneeling beside it. - Addressed to Walter Koschatzky (1921–2003), director of the Albertina in Vienna, who had made possible Janssen’s solo exhibition “Drawings” in April 1982. - “You cannot imagine how happy your third handwritten letter has made me. It is the crowning glory of my Albertina happiness. Not as far as my drawing is concerned [!]—I still intend to draw the ‘real thing’ by the year 2020 (when I’ll be 91)—but as far as the RECEPTION is concerned, the exhibition you have given me is the highlight. Thank you. [...] once again, in high spirits:—happy + thanks, Horst Janssen.”—The exhibition at the Albertina is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the reception of Janssen’s work.—From a private collection in Berlin. We are announcing, also “in an excellent mood,” two special catalogs for our 2027 auctions: The Elbe River Is Also Fascinating. Klaus Hegewisch’s Horst Janssen Collection. Drawings and Prints. Presented in a suitably elaborate linen folder and slipcase with a facsimile of the letter.
