Special edition of Spoerri’s “Material”: Hajo Bode. Elementary Building Blocks of Matter. Typescript copy, four sheets. 1959. 29.7 × 21.0 cm. Auction start time: approx. 12:05 (Schedule subject to change) One of the very few surviving copies of this “Special Edition of material,” the precursor to the Edition MAT. - On January 30, 1959, Daniel Spoerri, Nusch, and Claus Bremer simultaneously recited texts at the opening of the Tinguely exhibition at the Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf. The typewritten sheets were assembled into a volume and rotated on a roller “that ran so fast that one could never speak coherent sentences. All three of us read at the same time. Television recorded us. It was quite funny.” (Spoerri’s recollection, quoted from: Vatsella. Edition MAT). A similar simultaneous reading was part of one of the “Three Methods of Being Creative” that Spoerri demonstrated at the ICA in London in March 1960. - The three texts were “not published as a booklet in the style of ‘material,’ but in their original form as mimeographed, typewritten A4 pages [...].” - At the end, the note reads: “distributed by passagebuchhandlung jürgen dahl krefeld germany.” - In immaculate condition. A gift from Daniel Spoerri to the current owner.
