The entire scene is captured as a vision of floating, mysterious ghosts, imbued with an expressionist intensity that draws on the legacy of the European avant-garde as well as certain decadent and dramatic influences from the great Scipione. The atmosphere hanging over the ancient pine trees and the few black silhouettes (perhaps the remains of ancient walls) is oppressive and seems on the verge of deeply intermingling with the various images that make up the work” (Ottorino Stefani, catalog entry, exhibition, 1989).
