ANA MERCEDES HOYOS Colombia, 1942–2014 Tempera for the cover of Lámpara magazine, 1970 Tempera on paper 27 x 42 cm Signed and dated “AMHoyos 70” at the bottom center. This work belongs to Ana Mercedes Hoyos’s early period, when her painting—influenced by Pop Art—found in the buses, streets, and signs of Bogotá’s urban landscape the motifs for an increasingly personal exploration of form and color. The intensity of the red and blue, the precision of the horizontal stripes, and the white lines converging toward the horizon reveal her search for a geometric synthesis capable of transforming everyday reality into an almost abstract composition. Created for the cover of Lámpara magazine, it serves as an interesting testament to the early career of one of Colombia’s greatest artists. Literature: Lámpara magazine. No. 67, Vol. XIV—2nd issue of 1970. Featured on the cover. Benjamín Villegas Collection, Bogotá.
