GONZALO ARIZA Colombia, 1912–1995 Tequendama Falls, 1984 Ink on paper 25 x 33.5 cm Signed “G A” in the lower left corner. In 1984, the master artist Gonzalo Ariza proposed to Benjamín Villegas that they create a book about the Bogotá River, and to that end, he spent several months traveling along it and interpreting its landscapes. This original ink drawing, created during his visit to the Tequendama Falls and reproduced on the endpapers of the book in 1985, reveals his extraordinary sensitivity in depicting nature. The influence of Japanese painting is evident in the freedom and delicacy of the brushstrokes, the richness of the nuances, and the balance between the dark areas and the empty spaces on the paper. With an admirable economy of means, Ariza manages to suggest the density of the vegetation, the humidity of the environment, and the atmosphere of the landscape. Literature: Hernández de Alba, Guillermo. Río Bogotá. Bogotá: Benjamín Villegas & Editores, 1985. Endpapers of the book. Benjamín Villegas Collection, Bogotá.
