507 - Hopi Salako Mana (Shalako Maiden) Katsina Doll 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unidentified Hopi carver Materials: Hand-carved cottonwood root, organic or mineral pigments, woven cotton fabric garment, and natural feather embellishment. Marking(s): No visible signatures or maker's marks on the exterior surfaces (traditional old-style figures were typically unsigned). Cataloguer's Note: This vintage, old-style tihu represents the Salako Mana (Shalako Maiden), a revered cloud and rain-bringing spirit in Hopi Pueblo cosmology. The figure features the signature stepped, multi-tiered tablita/headpiece, a prominent white semi-circular band across the face, and meticulous dot motifs. It is outfitted in a hand-sewn, weathered textile garment mimicking traditional ceremonial robes. The doll shows signs of age-related wear, including minor paint fading and fabric discoloration, consistent with mid-20th-century Native American ethnographic art. H 13" x L (taken from head) 7"
