97 - Antique American Folk Art Fretwork Gothic Cathedral Clock Early 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unknown Materials: Stained wood Marking(s): Unmarked Cataloguer's Note: This remarkable early 20th-century American folk art fretwork Gothic cathedral clock showcases the peak of late-Victorian and early-Edwardian scroll saw mastery. Entirely handcrafted, the multi-tiered architectural tower relies on elaborate openwork tracery, miniature spires, and pointed arches that brilliantly emulate the grandeur of Gothic Revival architecture. Notably, the craftsman incorporated whimsical folk art flourishes, including miniature animal silhouettes—resembling stags or deer—resting along the lower rooftop balustrade. While many large-scale clock towers from this period were built using popular imported commercial templates, the highly individualized details and ambitious three-dimensional scale suggest a specialized, dedicated artisan. The central clock face features traditional Roman numerals, tying together a highly collectible example of American woodworking hobbyist craft. H 46" x L 22" x W 8"
