R.J Horner & Co. Vernis Martin Curved Glass Vitrine 19th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: R.J. Horner & Co. Furniture Makers (New York, NY) Materials: Wood, gilt bronze/ormolu mounts, glass, hand-painted lacquer (Vernis Martin technique) Marking(s): An original rectangular manufacturer's plate affixed to the upper back casing, reading: "R.J. HORNER & CO. / FURNITURE MAKERS. / 63 & 65 W. 23RD ST., N.Y." Cataloguer's Note: Two shelves. Keys included. Mirrored back paneling. This c. 1890 Gilded Age curio cabinet (vitrine) reflects the late-19th-century American obsession with French court styles, particularly the Belle Époque revival of Louis XV tastes. While R.J. Horner & Co. is predominantly celebrated for monumental, heavily carved American oak pieces featuring mythical creatures, the firm simultaneously catered to high-society Manhattan estates by manufacturing and importing exquisite European-style salon furniture. This specific piece utilizes the classic Vernis Martin lacquer process, a specialized 18th-century French technique meant to replicate Chinese and Japanese lacquers. It features hand-painted romantic, pastoral courting scenes on the lower panels and delicate floral garlands along the upper frieze, all accented by a golden/bronze-dusted background. Notable features include its bowed/curved glass door, side panels, and decorative ormolu mounts. The presence of the original 23rd Street showroom metal tag significantly elevates its provenance and collectibility for Gilded Age furniture enthusiasts. H 63" x Depth 14" x L 31" Good antique condition. One missing back panel. Unless otherwise stated, all information provided is the opinion of our specialists.
