A jurist, economist, banker, and academic, he was one of only three Jewish prime ministers in Italian history, alongside Alessandro Fortis and Sidney Sonnino. During his tenure as Prime Minister (March 31, 1910 – March 29, 1911), the fiftieth anniversary of Italian unification was celebrated. Together with Edoardo Deodati and Francesco Ferrara, he was a founder of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He was the founder of the Banca Popolare di Milano and served as president of that bank from 1865 to 1870, in addition to serving as its honorary president from 1870 to 1927. He was also the founder of the Banca Popolare di Lodi. In 1903, he founded the Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari. He is buried in the Verano Cemetery in Rome. After his death, his heirs donated his papers to the Venetian Institute of Sciences, Letters, and Arts, of which he had been a member during his lifetime; the archive is still housed there, at the institute’s headquarters in Palazzo Loredan (Campo Santo Stefano).
