Provenance: La Perle Gallery, Hanoi, Tonkin (according to a label on the reverse) Private collection, United Kingdom Related work(s): Pierre Dieulefils (1862–1937), Postcard of the Throne Room in Huế, Annam, DR Description: This watercolor depicts the interior of the Throne Room in the Imperial City of Hué and may constitute a rare historical record. Several clues suggest that the scene predates the 1923 renovation. Notably, the fabric valance above the throne—which was replaced after the renovation with a gilded wooden valance—is visible, as are the vases, which appear in the painting and in two black-and-white photographs from the 1890s but were removed during the renovation. To the best of our knowledge, the only other documents showing the throne room in this condition are these two photographs from the 1890s and an old postcard (see Related Work). Through its color—which photography could not capture at the time—this watercolor offers a unique glimpse of this space before its transformation.
