Clos Mogador, 2005. D.O.Q. Priorat, Gratallops, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. Red wine. 8 bottles of 75 cl. 6 bottles in their original wooden case. Opened for inspection. Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate): 98/100. Proensa Guide: 100/100. Condition: All eight bottles are filled to the neck (IN, Into Neck). Original black capsules, intact, with slight superficial signs of storage. Original front labels, complete and legible, with moisture stains and superficial mold. One of the labels has a small tear with localized paper loss in the upper right corner. These issues do not prevent the wine or its vintage from being identified. Original back labels are preserved, with minor signs of wear. Six bottles are accompanied by the original Clos Mogador wooden case, labeled with the 2005 vintage. It comes from a private collection, stored under optimal temperature and humidity conditions. Clos Mogador is one of the great historical landmarks of the Priorat and one of the iconic wines that have shaped this region’s transformation into a wine-growing area of international prestige. Created by René Barbier in Gratallops, it is made from vineyards situated on steep slopes, on the characteristic llicorella soils—a type of slate that promotes drainage and contributes to the concentration and uniqueness of the grapes. Its blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah offers a complex interpretation of the Mediterranean landscape, combining ripe fruit, structure, and a pronounced mineral character. The 2005 vintage stands out for its concentration, balance, and remarkable aging potential. With bottle aging, it can develop aromas of ripe black fruit, plum, candied cherry, licorice, sweet spices, cocoa, underbrush, and delicate balsamic and mineral notes. On the palate, it is characterized by its breadth, depth, and persistence, supported by a tannic structure that favors long-term aging. This vintage also holds special historical significance due to Clos Mogador’s recognition as a “Vi de Finca Qualificada,” a pioneering distinction in Spain.
