Pagos Viejos is one of the historic wines from Artadi, a winery founded in Laguardia in 1985 and closely linked to the revival of Rioja Alavesa wines. Made from Tempranillo grapes sourced from a selection of old vineyards, this wine reflects the character of the region’s clay-limestone soils and the winery’s philosophy, centered on expressing the origin and quality of the grapes. The 2002 vintage, marked by challenging weather conditions in Rioja, offers a more restrained profile of ripeness, with notes of red and black fruit, spices, leather, tobacco, and balsamic nuances characteristic of its aging. Its structure, elegance, and complexity reflect the style of the region’s great age-worthy reds. Artadi’s legacy, the prestige of Pagos Viejos, and the presentation of the set in its original wooden box make this lot particularly appealing to collectors.
