1 magnum bottle of Romanée-Conti. Grand Cru, 1996. Burgundy, France. Red wine. 1.5 L. Bottle No. 0098. Source: Private collector. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the most important winery in this appellation. It is likely the most prestigious winery in the world—and therefore also the most expensive—and a true national treasure in France. Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée St. Vivant, Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, Montrachet, and Corton—this winery’s historic portfolio consists of exceptional grands crus. Two of these are held under a monopoly (as the sole owners of the vineyard), and all are located in the heart of the Côte d’Or, one of the most prized regions among wine lovers. The history of this small estate dates back to 1232, when the Abbey of Saint-Vivant received a donation of significant vineyards in the town of Vosne-Romanée—today’s Romanée-Conti and Romanée Saint-Vivant. In 1760, the Prince of Conti, a member of the French royal family, acquired the property but lost it in 1780 when it was expropriated during the French Revolution; it was subsequently sold at auction. In the decades that followed, Romanée-Conti passed through the hands of numerous owners until 1869, when it was acquired by Jacques-Marie Duvault Blochet, a winegrower who also owned other prestigious vineyards. Duvault Blochet consolidated the vast and prestigious estate, and to this day, the descendants of his two daughters—the De Villaine and Leroy families—jointly own this noble property in equal shares. The Romanée-Conti winery is known worldwide as one of the most prized jewels in the world of wine. Located in the Burgundy region of France, this winery is famous for producing some of the most exclusive and coveted wines on the planet. Its name comes from its flagship vineyard, Romanée-Conti, a Pinot Noir Grand Cru that has achieved legendary status. Romanée-Conti wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and aging potential. They are considered some of the finest examples of Burgundy wines, and their price reflects their iconic status.
