Sergio Colombo (1929–2014) Old Farmhouse, 1979 Oil on canvas 60 x 70 cm Signature: “S. Colombo” on the front Date: “79” on the front Other inscriptions: “Old Farmhouse,” artist’s name and address on the reverse Provenance: Veneto Banca SpA in LCA Condition. Support: 95% Condition. Surface: 95% For direct WhatsApp assistance before and during the live auction: +39 346 12 999 80 // Direct assistance via WhatsApp before and during the auction: +39 346 12 999 80 This small landscape is part of a set of four—not necessarily originally conceived as a unified group—attributed to Giuseppe Bernardino Bison (1762–1844) by Cesare Lampronti, who also dedicated an in-depth entry to the works, highlighting, for three of the four pieces, their connections to Canaletto prototypes documented by W. G. Constable and J. G. Links in “Canaletto. Giovanni Antonio Canal 1697–1768,” Oxford, 1989, nos. 95, 113, and 228 (plates 27, 29, 47). In fact, the view under consideration “is taken from the opposite bank, with St. Mark’s Column behind the artist. On the right stands the Column of St. Theodore, behind which appear the buildings of the Libreria, the Zecca, the Granai, and the Fonteghetto della Farina. On the left, toward the background, lies the entrance to the Grand Canal, bordered on the left by the Punta della Dogana, behind which the dome and church of Santa Maria della Salute can be seen.” The image is based on a prototype by Canaletto that was “widely circulated among 18th-century landscape painters, including through engravings based on Visentini’s originals for the series of etchings printed from the most famous paintings of the great Venetian master” (Lampronti, entry, p. 2). The attribution is considered to require independent review by Charles Beddington (communication of May 24, 2021), Giuseppe Pavanello (communication of May 24, 2021), and Anna Bozena Kowalczyk (communication dated June 17, 2021). We thank Charles Beddington, Anna Bozena Kowalczyk, and Giuseppe Pavanello for their support in cataloging this work.
