He worked as a set designer for television and as a screenwriter at the Sliven Theater. After graduating from the Academy, he developed a passion for the surrealism of Salvador Dalí, who greatly influenced him. Before 1989, he worked for “Hemus,” an organization dedicated to exporting Bulgarian works of art abroad. A few months before the fall of the communist regime in Bulgaria, during the so-called perestroika, he obtained a tourist passport. At his very first exhibition abroad, in Nîmes, all of his paintings were purchased. In Italy, he was represented by the Sterling Gallery. After moving to Ancona, to Villa Lauri, he began producing a large body of work for the Italian market. Five years later, he returned to Bulgaria, where he devoted himself to teaching art theory, painting, illustration, and performance at New Bulgarian University (Svetoslava Bancheva, “Mikhail Chomakov: I Went to Rome in a Trabant and Became an Artist of the Camorra,” e-vestnik.bg, November 5, 2007).
