KHOTAN Rug Central Asia. Late 19th century. Wool velour on a cotton backing. A dusty pink field serves as the backdrop for a scattering of flowers and blossoms arranged in a staggered pattern, interspersed with stylized plant stems, reminiscent of medieval paving. The border consists of six alternating bands of floral garlands and “S” motifs crocheted onto an ivory and navy background. The seventh and outermost band, on a brick-red background, features small Botehs. These can be interpreted as the seven steps leading to paradise. L_ 306 cm H_258 cm Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
