SOUMAK Rug Caucasus-Shirvan. Late 19th century. Wool pile on a wool foundation. A brick-red field outlined with trophies, filled with small flowers, diamonds, and entomological motifs, features three large, crenellated, crocheted, lozenge-shaped marine medallions adorned with crosses and plant motifs. The brick-red octagonal centers feature polychrome star-shaped flowers. The design is enriched by eight crocheted navy blue octagons of the same style, as well as multicolored stylized pyramidal shapes (Caucasian Kindjals). Two marine counter-borders, featuring a series of brick-red star-shaped flowers, frame the main anthracite border, which features polychrome Kotchaks set against a marine and brick-red serrated line. The outer border is known as the “running dogs” border. A beautiful Caucasian ensemble. H_237 cm L_340 cm Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
