MELAYER Rug Persian. First third of the 20th century. Wool pile on a cotton backing. A navy blue field features an ivory counterfield—hexagonal, oblong, and adorned with arabesques; which in turn serves as a setting for a navy-blue, diamond-shaped medallion with spear-shaped pendants. The entire design is covered with an intricate scattering of small, stylized, multicolored flowers. Four secondary borders—two cream-colored ones featuring small “Kotchaks” and two brick-red ones with small flowers—frame the main bluish border with polychrome flowering stems.
