TEHRAN Rug (Persia), Late 19th century. Wool pile on a cotton backing. Delicate trees with branches covered in multicolored flowers—whose branches form a mihrab against an ivory background—serve as a refuge for a variety of wildlife (colorful birds, deer, and monkeys). The main border features an interlaced pattern of floral scrolls, embellished with perched birds. It is flanked by two sky-blue sub-borders with small flowers and birds, as well as two ivory sub-borders with plant garlands. A work of great poetry. H_ 315 cm L_201 cm Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
